Sorry I didn't get this done last night, but after all the cool decks I wanted to try and brew a little bit and finally nail down what I'm going to be taking to the SCG Regional Championships, and then I failed at that so I just watched Netflix until it was time to get some sleep. I'm here now though, don't worry - So, let's get started!
While the new brews may have been cool, and caught some screen time during the Open the only one to make Top 8 was Jeff Hoogland's U/W Thopter Control build utilizing Divination at Instant speed and Thopter Spy Network.
Turbo Fog as fun as it was, didn't make Day 2, and the 5 Color Rally deck that went undefeated day 1? Well, it was shot down in a whirl of fire on Day 2. The upshot to all of this? Well, it was week 1 and now that they've taken their decks to big events (The open had 760+ players) they can look at their lists, and see what they can do to maybe take them to the next level.
Even though there may have new brews, and some of them may have done okay and others not so much, it was the old stand-bys to win anything. Chicago's Top 8 -
8th Place - Mardu Dragons
7th Place - U/W Thopter Control
6th Place - Jeskai Tokens (Jace is amazing in this deck)
5th Place - Abzan Control
4th Place - G/R Devotion
3rd Place - G/R Devotiion
2nd Place - W/u Heroic
1st Place - G/R Devotion
.... notice a theme? Apparently G/R Devotion is pretty good!
The final match came down Open star Logan Mize running W/u Heroic vs the Open Newcomer Tuan Nguyen and his G/R Devo deck. Logan looked like the clear winner, and took down Game 1 with ease, in Game 2 the Devotion strategy was able to do it's thing quicker and left Logan with relevant spells in hand while he lost.
Sadly, Game 3 the Heroic player had to Mull down to 3 cards in the grip on the play. After a keep and pass Tuan was able to go Forest into Mystic. Logan was able to top deck a Mana Confluence and it looked like we might be able to have a game on our hands, but it took him too long to draw into his second land and eventually the handshake was offered giving Tuan the win.
Heroic, the worst deck to ever win anything... did not win this Open, though by all rights it certainly could have.
Either way, with these week 1 results, you may very well be able to look at the decks that were played and maybe find something that can be played and do a lot better. Goblins only had a deck or two in the top 64, Piledriver did not have a very good opening weekend. Does that mean that it can't do better? No, and while I'm not looking at running Goblins personally I think the deck while being All-In can be fiercely competitive in both Standard and Modern now.

I recommend looking through the results and seeing if you can find something you like and tuning it up a little!
Have fun!
